- ½ cup unsalted butter softened to room temperature
- ¼ cup fresh basil leaves finely chopped
- ¼ teaspoon sea salt or to taste
- ⅛ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- ½ teaspoon lemon zest optional
Place the butter in a medium bowl and let it soften at room temperature until smooth and spreadable, but not melted.
Finely chop the basil leaves until small and evenly textured. Avoid over-processing.
Add the basil, salt, pepper, and optional lemon zest to the butter. Mix until smooth, creamy, and evenly flecked with basil.
Transfer the butter onto a sheet of parchment paper and roll into a log shape. Twist the ends to seal.
Refrigerate for 30–60 minutes, or until firm and sliceable.
Slice into rounds or scoop as needed. Let sit at room temperature for a few minutes before serving for best texture.
