I spent the weekend celebrating various milestone birthdays with family and friends -- a second cousin's 50th, a college friend's 35th and my grandma's 94th. {I'd say anything after 90 is a milestone!} It's safe to say that "clean eating" was put on the back burner for a few days. Moderation, right?!
Our friend's 35th was a big backyard pool party shindig at their house, complete with beer pong and flip cup tables; a nice little nod to our younger, child-free years. We all had a blast catching up, chowing down and tossing them back... but I'm pretty sure 90% of those in attendance had a hardcore reality check come Sunday morning. WE ARE NO LONGER 21. Ouch. #PassTheAdvil
Needless to say, after a weekend of cake and cocktails, I've been craving the goodness of healthy, whole foods. The problem is, my sweet tooth doesn't back down even when I feel the need to crank things up nutritionally, and I almost always want a little something sweet after meals or in the evenings.
On the weekends, I tend to bypass the sweets and have a glass or two of wine instead, which is something I also enjoy. But during the week, I try to avoid alcohol, so I often find myself wanting to nibble or sip on something after dinner while I'm unwinding. It's a conundrum when you're attempting to keep things clean-ish Monday through Friday. {Ok, Monday through Friday afternoon, at least. Let's be real.} What's a girl to do?
As it turns out, "Have a Piña Colada!" is the answer to that question! {Stay with me, here.} This Watermelon Piña Colada Slushie has become my go-to sweet sip of the summer, and it contains zero sugar or alcohol, making it a perfectly acceptable treat for any time of the day, any day of the week.
If you watch my Instagram stories you've probably heard me mention how I've fallen in love with various Barlean's products for my family -- from the Chocolate Silk Greens to the fish oil and flax oil Omega Swirls, I can't get enough of these products that help me to add an extra dose of nutrients to our daily diet in a delicious way. My husband, who is extremely picky with the type of natural foods/supplements, has even become a huge fan of their stuff, panicking a little when we're running low on his favorites! They've not only helped me sneak some extra nutrients into Cole's food during this picky toddler phase, but have also helped me bump up my own game in making sure I'm regularly getting a dose of good stuff especially if I've strayed from stellar food choices.
For their July challenge, Barlean's asked us to come up with a way to beat the summer heat by using one of their products in any frozen preparation, and that's how this satisfying slushie came to be! With just a handful of ingredients, it's incredibly easy to blitz in the blender and serve up with a straw any time that sweet craving hits. A touch of tartness from fresh lime juice balances out the sweetness of watermelon, and their Piña Colada-flavored Fish Oil Omega Swirl adds just the right amount of rich, creamy coconut flavor to this simply delightful slushie.
{As a side note, the flavor of this Swirl is seriously heavenly, even directly from a spoon, which you wouldn't think would be the case since it has the word "fish" in the title -- but trust me. I was shocked at how good it was!}
Rebooting the system after a weekend of fun is a lot more exciting when you're sipping on a summery concoction! {Extra points for a hollowed-out pineapple cup!} Cheers to a week of enticing, healthy choices!
