From festive decor to music to menu, these Mardi Gras party ideas will have you ready to celebrate Fat Tuesday, New Orleans-style!
Mardi Gras is a chance to throw a spirited celebration full of color, flavor, and good times. Whether you’re hosting friends for a Fat Tuesday feast or planning a lively Carnival-themed bash, these Mardi Gras party ideas will help you bring the Big Easy home with style!
Set the Scene with Bold Decor
Few things say Mardi Gras like purple, green, and gold — the traditional colors of Carnival representing justice, faith, and power. Deck your space out with vibrant streamers, balloons, beads, and masks to create an instant party vibe. Ideas to elevate your decor:
- Hang bead curtains at the entrance for a dramatic welcome.
- Scatter Mardi Gras masks and feathers as table centerpieces.
- Use string lights and chic tableware to reflect the festive mood.
Decor doesn’t have to be expensive, just full of personality and that unmistakable Mardi Gras energy. Check out my Mardi Gras Party shop page for more supplies and essentials.
Create a Playlist That Brings the Bayou to You
Music is the heartbeat of New Orleans. Mix up jazz classics, Zydeco grooves, and brass-band anthems to keep the energy high. A curated playlist can transport your guests straight to Bourbon Street, whether you’re sipping cocktails or dancing between dishes.
Feast Like You’re in New Orleans
No Mardi Gras party is complete without a feast that honors Louisiana’s rich culinary traditions. From soulful stews to sweet treats, these flavors bring authentic Carnival spirit to your table.
Appetizers & Small Bites
Start strong with bold, crowd-friendly apps:
Cajun Shrimp Dip
Bold, perfectly spiced and dippable, this easy appetizer can be served with crackers or crostini.

Vegetarian Muffuletta Bagel Sandwiches
A handheld take Central Grocery’s Italian-inspired sandwich, this veggie version will appeal to all! Make it on mini bagels or more traditional sesame seed rolls and watch them disappear.

Show-Stopping Mains
Satisfying inning main dishes that will satisfy every appetite:
One Pot Jambalaya
This hearty rice dish can be made with a variety of proteins (chicken, shrimp, sausage, etc.) and hits the spot every time!

Shrimp Fricassee
Seafood lovers rejoice! This rich, saucy shrimp dish has a satisfying, stick-to-your-ribs quality that makes it a perfect dish when you’re craving a hearty meal.

Sweet Finishes
No Mardi Gras table is complete without dessert:
Mini King Cakes
The iconic Carnival treat glazed in purple, green, and gold sugar, often hiding a tiny trinket for tradition. I personally love these minis more than a classic, full-sized cake because they can be enjoyed on the spot or taken to go! They make a fantastic edible party favor.

Baked Beignets
If you (like I) avoid the process of deep frying, you’ll be happy to know that you can still enjoy classic, pillow-light fried dough dusted with powdered sugar a la Cafe du Monde. (Ok, maybe not exactly like those, but they’re still good, I promise!)

No-Spread Sugar Cookies
This foolproof cut out cookie recipe is my go-to during the holidays, but it’s perfect for whipping up festive cookies for any occasion! These Mardi Gras themed cookie cutters are perfect for the job.
Bananas Foster Sandwich Cookies
Another NOLA-inspired favorite, Dark rum-infused dulce de leche & fresh banana are sandwiched between buttery spritz cookies.

Pair these with classic Carnival drinks like hurricanes or a King Cake cocktail for adults, and mocktails for younger guests.
Games & Activities That Keep the Party Rolling
Turn your gathering into an event with Mardi Gras-themed entertainment:
- Mask decorating station. Purchase a set of mask-decorating kits and let guests create their own flair
- Mardi Gras trivia or scavenger hunt. Great for competitive spirits.
- Find the baby in the king cake. The guest who finds the trinket gets bragging rights (and maybe a prize).
- Set up a photo booth with props for keepsake snapshots.
These activities make your party more than just good food — they make it memorable.

Oh my gosh, I lied! I thought it was my old recipe but it's actually an adapted Emeril recipe. Just as good, but not the one I thought. lol Just wanted to clear that up! 😉

Thanks, Jess! That Jambalaya recipe is one of our favorites. I adapted it from a recipe I cut out of the newspaper when we lived in Dallas & it's one of those crinkled up recipes that will probably stay in my collection forever. 🙂
