I started mentally writing this post on the drive to my son's school holiday concert, partially because there was traffic and I was trying to keep frustrations at bay, but also because multitasking is essential to survival in these last few days before Christmas.
No matter what, it seems like no amount of careful planning can get me caught up on my ever-growing list of things that must be done this time of year. That's why when it comes to writing up my menu for holiday entertaining, I don't mess around.
There's no time to fiddle with recipes that might work or that could be crowd-pleasers. Those are luxuries one can only afford in the off-season.
When it comes to showstopping holiday eats, you might think that fancy beats fast, but I'm here to tell you that there's no need to learn how to create a towering croquembouche to get a reaction out of your guests. {Unless you really want to. Showoff.}
A little festive creativity is all you need to make a treat that is worthy of the holiday spotlight.
This Oreo Cheese Ball is exactly the type of dessert recipe that I love for this busy time of year.
Made with rich cream cheese, crushed Oreo cookies cookies and a hint of pure peppermint extract, it doesn't get much easier {or tastier, for that matter!}. It's got the flavors of cheesecake without the hassle. It looks like an ornament, for heaven's sake. In short: It's bound to be a hit!

Instructions
The process for this cheese ball is simple: Simply mix together the cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar and crushed Oreos, shape into a ball, then stud with candy-coated chocolate candies, sprinkles or your favorite festive embellishments for a finishing touch that is dressed in its holiday best.
Serve with graham crackers or even pretzel crisps for a bit of salt to balance out the sweet!
This recipe is easily made a day ahead, then finished off just before guests arrive -- little ones make great cheese ball decorating recruits, but you may lose a few candies or sprinkles in the process! 😉
No matter how many things you've got left on your task list, there's definitely time for a treat that's this easy. The best part? You'll be multitasking when you serve up a dessert and get a smile all at once!

Oreo Cheese Ball
Ingredients
- 8 ounces cream cheese softened
- 4 tablespoons butter softened
- ½ cup + 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- ½ teaspoon peppermint extract*
- 8 Oreo cookies crushed
For Decorating:
- Holiday M&M's or colorful candies, nonpareils or sprinkles
Instructions
- Line a small bowl with plastic wrap. You'll need enough to hang over the edges so that you can completely cover the cream cheese mixture.
- In the bowl of a stand mixer {or using a hand mixer}, cream together the cream cheese and butter until smooth and combined.
- Add the powdered sugar and mix until fully incorporated. Beat in the peppermint extract. Gently Fold in the crushed Oreos until just mixed in.
- Scoop the mixture into the plastic wrap-lined bowl. Gather the excess plastic wrap and purse it into a ball, twisting the top. Refrigerate for 2-3 hours or until firm.
- When the mixture is chilled and firm, remove from the refrigerator. Take the cheese ball out of the bowl and, with the plastic wrap still on, shape it into a ball. Unwrap and place onto a small serving plate.
- Using your M&M's or sprinkles, press the decor onto the outside of the cheese ball in whatever pattern or design you desire.
- Top with an ornament cap for the full effect, or use a gold wrapped peanut butter cup or gold-wrapped chocolate caramel candy. Serve with graham crackers or pretzel crisps!
